Parents' guide

Design a stopping ritual with the bedtime museum

A good fit for

Children who find it hard to stop a favorite activity, enjoy collections, or worry unfinished work will disappear. Build a repeatable closing ritual without making it a reward or punishment.

Know before reading

Hookhook rushes, scatters the collection, and resists stopping. The story offers one tool, but children may need different warning times, visual schedules, or physical support.

Words to explore

museum
a place that cares for and displays objects
closing ritual
a familiar sequence that marks a temporary ending
pause
to stop for now with the intention of returning

Before reading

  • Which part of stopping play feels hardest?
  • What helps us trust that we can return tomorrow?

While reading

  • What happens to Hookhook's body and objects as the rushing increases?
  • Which problem do the three empty circles solve?

After reading

  • Which step might work in our home?
  • What if more than three treasures feel important?
  • How much warning before stopping would feel helpful?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: paper, crayons, box or cloth

  1. Let the child choose three steps, such as photo, safe box, and tomorrow sign.
  2. Draw a simple picture for each step.
  3. Try it with one small activity and revise from experience.

What may feel scary or confusing

If transitions cause frequent intense distress, reduce language, increase predictable cues, and discuss concerns with someone who knows the child. This guide is not a developmental assessment.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Do not say Hookhook can do it so the child should too. Let the child co-design the steps and accept that some nights require more support.
