Parents' guide

Read about fear without saying “there is nothing to fear”

A good fit for

Children curious about shadows and darkness or looking for words for fear. Read at a calm time; it need not be a bedtime story if it makes the child more alert.

Know before reading

The story includes a dark room, a power outage, imagined monsters, and crying. The boy's fear disappears quickly at the end, while real children may need time and may still ask for a light or a nearby adult.

Words to explore

shadow
a dark shape made when something blocks light
tremble
to shake in small, quick movements
familiar
known because we have seen it before

Before reading

  • How is a shadow made?
  • When you feel afraid, how would you like an adult to help?

While reading

  • What does Mother do that helps the boy feel less alone?
  • How does naming each object change what the boy sees?

After reading

  • Does the boy have to stop being afraid in one night?
  • Besides turning on a light, what else can help a room feel safe?
  • What name would you give a funny-shaped shadow?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: flashlight, 2–3 toys, blank wall

  1. Keep the room light on and shine the flashlight past a toy.
  2. Move the light nearer and farther away and observe the shadow.
  3. Let the child decide when to stop or add more light.

What may feel scary or confusing

A child may worry about a real outage or feel that their fear is dismissed. It is fine to stop and say, “Being scared is allowed; I am here with you.”

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Do not use the ending as proof that a child should now sleep in darkness. Let the child help choose a light, open door, or routine that feels safe.
