Parents' guide
Children curious about shadows and darkness or looking for words for fear. Read at a calm time; it need not be a bedtime story if it makes the child more alert.
The story includes a dark room, a power outage, imagined monsters, and crying. The boy's fear disappears quickly at the end, while real children may need time and may still ask for a light or a nearby adult.
Materials: flashlight, 2–3 toys, blank wall
A child may worry about a real outage or feel that their fear is dismissed. It is fine to stop and say, “Being scared is allowed; I am here with you.”
Do not use the ending as proof that a child should now sleep in darkness. Let the child help choose a light, open door, or routine that feels safe.
