Parents' guide

Find the way home with the lost little bat

A good fit for

Children interested in nocturnal animals or learning what information to give when separated. Discuss trusted adults and staying in a safe place.

Know before reading

The bat is separated from family and may meet worrying sounds or shadows. Read in daytime if separation or darkness is difficult, and reveal that the bat gets home safely if needed.

Words to explore

separated
away from the person or group one was with
echo
a sound that reflects and returns
landmark
a noticeable feature that helps identify a place

Before reading

  • If we cannot find each other, where should we stop?
  • Which information helps an adult reunite us?

While reading

  • Which senses help the bat navigate?
  • Which character seems like a safe helper, and why?

After reading

  • What keeps the bat from wandering at random?
  • Which landmarks are near our home?
  • Who are trusted adults in different places?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: paper, crayons

  1. Draw home or an agreed meeting point.
  2. Add three large landmarks without posting private details publicly.
  3. Practice stating a caregiver's name and asking a staff member for help.

What may feel scary or confusing

Do not train a child to roam in search of a caregiver. The core plan is to stop in a safe place and ask agreed staff or adults for help.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

If a child shares a fear of separation, listen and review the family plan instead of promising it could never happen.
