Parents' guide

Explore a changing identity with the many-colored octopus

A good fit for

Children who enjoy color and art or wonder whether interests and identity must fit one fixed choice. People can change across time and situations.

Know before reading

A friend's question about the “real color” confuses the octopus. A child may connect this with pressure to choose a gender expression, interest, group, or role. They need not disclose anything about themselves.

Words to explore

adapt
to change in response to a situation
identity
the many qualities and experiences that make us who we are
shade
a lighter, darker, or slightly different form of a color

Before reading

  • Why do some animals change color?
  • Can one person like several colors at once?

While reading

  • Do the friends' suggestions help or add confusion?
  • How does the octopus feel when the colors move naturally?

After reading

  • Does the octopus need a single “real color”?
  • What parts of us can change, and what might we want to keep?
  • How can a friend ask about identity respectfully?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: paper, many colored pencils

  1. Divide a circle into waking, playing, resting, and family time.
  2. Choose colors for feelings or energy without assigning universal meanings.
  3. Let the child explain only the sections they want to share.

What may feel scary or confusing

Colors and feelings have no fixed mapping. Do not correct red to angry or blue to sad; the child owns the meaning.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

The octopus does not have to be “finished” discovering itself. Identity may keep changing and invite new questions.
