Parents' guide

Talk about boundaries in the bears' home

A good fit for

Children learning about permission, personal space, and repair after damage. Role-play the choices instead of using the bears to frighten a child into compliance.

Know before reading

Goldilocks enters without permission, eats food, breaks a chair, and sleeps in a bed before fleeing from the bears. Some children may worry about strangers entering their own home.

Words to explore

permission
a clear agreement that someone may do something
boundary
a limit that tells others what is or is not okay for us
repair
to fix damage or help put a situation right

Before reading

  • What should we do before entering someone else's space?
  • Which belongings would you want others to ask before using?

While reading

  • At which moments could Goldilocks stop and choose differently?
  • How might Baby Bear feel on seeing the broken chair?

After reading

  • What could Goldilocks do after running away?
  • How might the bears explain their household boundaries?
  • Besides words, what can make an apology repair harm?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: three colors of paper or crayons

  1. Name an action such as borrowing a pencil, knocking, or hugging.
  2. Choose green, yellow, or red for okay, ask first, or not okay.
  3. Notice that answers can change with the person and situation.

What may feel scary or confusing

Do not imply that crossing a boundary by mistake makes someone bad. Emphasize stopping, hearing no, apologizing, and repairing.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Instead of deciding who is worst, invite the child to retell the event from Baby Bear's view and then Goldilocks's view.
