Parents' guide

Practice asking, pausing, and choosing with the dentist's mirror

A good fit for

Children preparing for dental or medical care or practicing bodily communication. Read ahead in a calm moment rather than using the story to force compliance during fear.

Know before reading

The story includes a dental tool, bright light, and an oral check, without pain or restraint. Real visits vary; caregivers can ask the clinic about steps and available accommodations.

Words to explore

examine
to look or check in steps to gather information
pause signal
an agreed word or movement asking for a temporary stop
participation
receiving an explanation, asking questions, and communicating feelings or needs about one's care

Before reading

  • Which part of a dental visit would you like explained first?
  • If speaking is hard, which pause signal could we use?

While reading

  • How does the dentist let Hookhook explore safely?
  • How does Hookhook communicate when the light is too bright?

After reading

  • How is courage to ask different from having no fear?
  • Which choices should a child have during a check?
  • How can an adult listen to a child's body signals?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: doll or toy, clean spoon as mirror, flashlight kept away from eyes

  1. Let the child choose patient, caregiver, or observer.
  2. Describe each step before touching the toy and ask permission.
  3. Practice a pause signal and have the examiner stop immediately every time.

What may feel scary or confusing

Do not promise there will be no pain when the actual procedure is unknown. Say truthfully that you will ask, stay nearby when permitted, and tell the team about discomfort.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Praise more than stillness or absence of tears. Also value asking questions, signaling a pause, reporting pain, and trying again when ready.
