Parents' guide

Talk about changed plans and safety with the duck family

A good fit for

Children who find changed plans difficult or enjoy water and family stories. It shows that flexibility and safety rules can belong in the same conversation.

Know before reading

The smallest duckling is swept along before the family rescues her. A child with a fear of water may need to pause or skip that image. In real life, stay away from fast water and remain close to an adult.

Words to explore

gloomy
dark or dim because the sky is cloudy
disappointed
sad because something hoped for did not happen
current
water moving in one direction

Before reading

  • How might you feel if rain changed a picnic plan?
  • What can we do on a rainy day and still stay safe?

While reading

  • How does Mother Duck help the ducklings see the changed plan differently?
  • When the water moves quickly, what should the family stop doing and start doing?

After reading

  • Which part was different from the old plan but still memorable?
  • How did each family member help during the mishap?
  • What rule should the duck family make for next time?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: paper, pencil

  1. Fold the paper: draw the original plan on the left and a backup on the right.
  2. Add two safe activities to each side.
  3. Choose one warning sign that means stop and get an adult.

What may feel scary or confusing

A child may remember only that rainwater is always safe for play. Separate the story from real rules: avoid drains, roads, fast water, and thunderstorms.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Do not insist that disappointment disappear at once. Acknowledge the feeling first, then make a new plan when the child is ready.
