Parents' guide

See a friendship that does not require sameness

A good fit for

Children noticing similarities and differences among peers or wondering whether they fit in. Friendship is more than being useful to each other.

Know before reading

The birds worry because they look different, then prove their teamwork by helping a rabbit. A child might infer that demonstrating a special ability is required to deserve friendship.

Words to explore

nimble
able to move quickly and easily
different
not the same in one or more ways
friendship
a relationship with trust and care

Before reading

  • Must friends like all the same things?
  • How can differences help people play or work together?

While reading

  • What makes Raya and Jib doubt their friendship?
  • How does each bird help in a way the other cannot?

After reading

  • Would they still be good friends without a kite rescue?
  • What can a friend do on a day when we have no energy to help?
  • How can a group keep differences from becoming teasing?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: paper, two colored pencils

  1. Draw two overlapping circles for two characters or people.
  2. Put shared qualities in the middle and differences at the sides.
  3. Add one activity they can enjoy together without becoming alike.

What may feel scary or confusing

Do not ask a child to disclose a private difference or one connected with teasing. Use characters or ordinary preferences instead.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Difference need not produce a useful result to have value. Existing, playing, and receiving respect are enough for group membership.
