Water Drops on a Taro Leaf

On stargazing night, Hookhook saw many stars above the canal but only a few above the community pavilion. Jibjib guessed the stars were hiding, Jeed guessed clouds, and Tuam wondered whether the ground lights mattered.
Hookhook invited everyone to draw their hypotheses, then view the sky through paper tubes from the same spot. Thin cloud crossed both sides, yet stars near the bright square remained harder to see even when the cloud opened.
Teacher Sailom did not switch off the path lights because people still needed to walk safely. Instead, the teacher helped shield the sides of one test lamp. It still lit the ground without shining as strongly into the stargazers' eyes.
When the thin cloud moved away, more stars appeared on both sides. Near the shielded lamp, they could also see stars lower in the sky. Cloud had hidden stars briefly, while glare made faint stars harder to see; both explanations could work together.
The square kept lights at corners and steps, while adults aimed upward-shining lamps down. No stars had truly vanished. The children had learned how overlapping conditions can change what observers see.
Several explanations can be true at once. We can test the evidence and adjust what we can while considering everyone's safety.
