Hoot Tales

The Owl and the Pussy-cat

The Owl and the Pussy-cat set sail in a beautiful pea-green boat, out on the sea at night. They took some honey, and plenty of money wrapped up in a big bank-note.

The Owl looked up at the stars sparkling above and sang to a tiny guitar, "O lovely Pussy, O Pussy my love, what a beautiful Pussy you are!"

The Pussy-cat smiled and said, "I would love to marry you, but we haven't got a ring." So they sailed on for a year and a day, until they reached the land where the Bong-tree grows.

There they found a little Piggy who wore a ring at the end of his nose. They bought the ring for just one shilling, and a Turkey who lived on the hill married them right there on the mountaintop.

That night, they celebrated with mince and slices of quince, eating with a curious runcible spoon. Then, hand in hand, they danced happily together by the light of the moon.

Love and friendship can carry even the most unlikely of friends on a joyful adventure together.
