Hookhook and the Single Sandal

After the rain, Hookhook found one yellow sandal outside the community pavilion. Three kinds of wet marks surrounded it: tiny round prints, long footprints, and a wavy drag mark leading toward the banana trees.

Hookhook nearly followed the long footprints at once, but Tuam noted they might belong to someone passing by. The friends sketched each shape, avoided stepping on the marks, and placed the sandal safely on a visible bench.

The tiny circles came from the end of Grandma Chan's walking stick, but the sandal was not hers. The long prints belonged to a vegetable courier wearing both shoes. Only the drag mark remained, disappearing beneath fallen leaves.

At the end of the drag mark, Jeed the gecko stood beside a puddle. Jeed had not lost the sandal but had seen a puppy carry it under shelter. Then the puppy's person picked it up, so the paw marks ended halfway home.

Hookhook posted a picture of the sandal at the pavilion. Soon a girl arrived with her puppy and reclaimed it, laughing when she learned who the sandal thief had been. One trail, Hookhook wrote, may contain more than one story.

One clue may have more than one explanation. Looking carefully and asking politely helps us understand what really happened.
