Who Moved the Moon Shadow?
Each night at the Rim Dao library, a crescent-shaped shadow appeared on the wall. Tonight it had shifted above the story shelf. Hookhook wondered who had moved it and sketched its position and the time in the notebook.
The next night, Hookhook arrived earlier. The crescent was near the window and moved as the hanging lamp swayed. The myna librarian placed three blank paper circles on the wall so they could compare positions.
Hookhook held the lamp still. The shadow's edge kept changing slowly, so the little owl followed the beam toward the window. A curved tamarind branch was swaying outside, but that did not yet explain the shadow's long journey.
They tested from safely inside. The librarian moved the lamp a little at a time while Hookhook watched the branch's shadow. Moving the lamp shifted the whole shadow; moving the branch made its edge tremble. Each change had a different effect.
On the third night, Hookhook predicted the shadow's place using the time, lamp, and branch. When the lamp came on, the crescent nearly matched the chosen circle. No one had moved the moon—light, an object, and one careful observer had revealed the connection.
Moral of the story
When something seems mysterious, repeated observations and changing one thing at a time can help us understand it without rushing to the first answer.
