Mina and the Missing Market Bell

Every morning, Auntie Sri rang a brass bell to open the canal market. Today its hook was empty. Mina offered to search before the vegetable boats and customers arrived.

The market sweeper had heard a jingle near the fruit stall. The ice carrier had seen a red cord across a crate. The banana seller remembered a small child carrying something round and shiny toward the pier.

Mina did not rush to blame anyone. She asked one person at a time and drew their paths in her notebook. All three clues met at Uncle Chan's bicycle-repair table near the pier.

There, a little boy was crying. He had found the bell after it fell, then brought it to Uncle Chan to mend its broken loop. Mina thanked him for keeping the market's bell safe.

Auntie Sri rang the repaired bell. Its chime joined the broom's swish, ice knocking in crates, and boats nudging the pier. Mina understood that the market opened through everyone's work, large and small.

Careful observation and respectful listening help us value every kind of work in a community.
