Which Color Is Hiding at the Market?

This morning, Nida held Grandma Oon’s hand as they entered the market. “Shall we play a noticing game?” Grandma asked. “Which color is hiding at the market?” Nida’s eyes grew wide. “Find, find, find!” Grandma smiled. “Look at color, shape, and pattern—we can find things in many ways.”

Grandma pointed to the first tray. “What is round and smooth with a star-shaped top?” Nida pointed too. “A tomato!” Which color was hiding there? “Red!” Round, smooth, red—one color found.

Next came fruit curved like smiles, with tiny spots on the peel. “Bananas!” Nida laughed. Which color was hiding there? “Yellow!” Curved, spotted, yellow—another color found.

Long things lay in a row on the next tray, with little bumps along their skin. “Cucumbers!” Nida answered. Which color was hiding there? “Green!” Long, bumpy, green—another color found.

Before they left, Nida spotted teardrop shapes with starry tops and shiny skin. “Eggplants—purple!” she called. Then she asked Grandma, “Which color is hiding at the market?” Grandma opened her hands. “Round, curved, long—we used color, shape, pattern, and texture to find them all!”

We can notice things by color, shape, pattern, and texture instead of relying on color alone.
