The Monkey and the Crocodile

Beside a wide river stood a rose-apple tree that bore sweet fruit all season. A young monkey lived in its high branches. Every afternoon, he tossed ripe fruit to a crocodile resting below, and their daily talks grew into friendship.

One day, the crocodile invited the monkey to a meal at his home across the water. Halfway there, he confessed that he had been pressured to bring the monkey as medicine. The monkey was terrified, but he took a breath and did not struggle or fall.

Thinking quickly, the monkey said, “I keep my heart in the hollow of my rose-apple tree. If it is truly needed, we must go back for it.” The crocodile believed him and immediately turned toward the shore.

As soon as they reached a low branch, the monkey leapt to safety. “Everyone carries a heart inside,” he said. “You put me in danger, so our trust cannot be the same.” The crocodile lowered his head.

The crocodile apologized and swam away without excuses. The monkey still shared fruit with visitors, but from then on he stayed near the shore and asked clear questions before any journey. His kindness remained, now joined by greater care.

A calm mind can reveal a way out of danger, and true friendship must never demand that someone be harmed.
