A good fit for

Children who enjoy brainstorming, planning, or group projects. Separate an appealing idea from a safe plan with clear responsibility.

Know before reading

The mice fear a cat and propose that one mouse tie a bell to it. The task is dangerous and nobody volunteers. Refusing unsafe work is not cowardice.

  • What can someone say when a task is too dangerous?

  • What should a group agree before work begins?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: 4 pieces of paper, pencil

  1. Label cards goal, people, materials, and safety.
  2. Choose a simple plan and answer every card.
  3. If an answer is missing, revise the plan or seek more information.

What may feel scary or confusing

A child should not be pressured to volunteer in order to prove bravery, especially for work that belongs to an adult or trained professional.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Do not mock the mice for talking without acting. Finding a flaw before action is valuable planning work.
