Aladdin and the Magic Lamp

In a bustling trading city, teenage Aladdin helped his mother mend and sell cloth, though he often dreamed of an easy road to comfort. A strange magician claimed to be a relative and offered a treasure hunt. “Bring me one old lamp,” he said, “and all the other riches may be yours.”

Beneath a stone in a rocky valley, steps led into a cave. Aladdin passed rooms of gold without touching them and found a tarnished brass lamp. When the magician demanded the lamp first, Aladdin asked to be helped out first. Furious, the man sealed the entrance and left the boy in darkness.

Aladdin wiped dust from the lamp. Blue-and-gold smoke curled into a guardian spirit. “The lamp's holder may command me,” the spirit said. Aladdin nearly asked for a mountain of gold, but stopped. “Please take me safely home.” In a blink, he was embracing his mother again.

Once Aladdin understood the lamp's reach, he tested it with a table of food. Then he noticed hungry neighbors and changed his request: a community oven, a clean well, and tools for workers. “What appears overnight still needs daily care,” the spirit warned, so everyone shared the work.

The magician returned to steal the lamp, but Aladdin recognized his deceiving voice and the neighbors blocked his escape. With the lamp recovered, Aladdin used one last request to release the spirit from obeying every holder. The spirit chose to remain a friend, and the ordinary lamp reminded Aladdin that wise choices are magic anyone can practice.

Great power needs responsibility, and no gift is more precious than the freedom to choose one's own life.
