The Elves and the Shoemaker

Once upon a time, there lived a kind shoemaker and his wife. Though they worked hard every day, they grew poorer and poorer, until only one piece of leather remained. One night, he cut the leather into the shape of a shoe, planning to sew it together the next morning, and went to bed feeling worried.

The next morning, the shoemaker woke up to a wonderful surprise. On the table sat a beautifully finished pair of shoes, stitched with neat, delicate craftsmanship, as fine as any master shoemaker's work. Customers who came by admired them and happily paid a high price, giving the couple enough money to buy leather for several more pairs.

Night after night, the shoemaker cut the leather before bed, and every morning a pair of perfectly finished shoes waited for him. His shop grew famous, and customers came from all around, bringing the couple more and more good fortune. Still, they couldn't help wondering who was secretly helping them every night.

One night, the shoemaker and his wife decided to stay awake and hide behind a curtain to see who was helping them. When midnight struck, two tiny elves hopped up onto the table. With their small hands, they stitched the shoes quickly and skillfully — but their clothes were ragged and worn, and they looked cold.

Out of gratitude, the shoemaker's wife sewed tiny new clothes and little shoes for the two elves, and left them on the table instead of leather. When the elves found the new clothes, they were overjoyed. They quickly put them on and danced merrily around the shop before hopping away with happy smiles. The elves never returned, but the shoemaker and his wife lived happily and comfortably ever after, thanks to their own skilled hands and the warm memory of the kindness they had shared.

Kindness and gratitude passed between friends bring happiness to both the giver and the one who receives.
