A young reddish-brown squirrel plays joyfully on a tree branch surrounded by fallen orange and red autumn leaves, while his mother stands at the entrance of their tree hollow, pointing and reminding him to gather nuts, which he ignores.

All through autumn, the young squirrel spent his days playing and having fun, even though his mother reminded him again and again to gather nuts for the winter ahead. But he never listened.

White snow blankets the forest suddenly and heavily. The young squirrel jumps and rolls excitedly through the deep white snowdrifts, snowflakes drifting through the cold air, with bare trees covered in snow all around.

Then one day, the first snow of the year fell suddenly, much earlier than anyone expected. The young squirrel was thrilled, running and rolling joyfully through the fresh white snow.

The young squirrel freezes in place, stricken with panic, standing amid deep white snow and looking around with a fearful expression. The entire ground is buried under thick snow, hiding everything beneath it, under a cold, grey, cloud-covered sky.

Before long, the young squirrel began to panic, suddenly remembering he hadn't stored a single nut, and the snow now covered the ground so thickly he couldn't tell where any nuts might have fallen.

The young squirrel digs frantically through a snowdrift with his paws, while other squirrels with thick, warm-looking fur approach and share nuts from their own stores. Snow continues to fall gently around them.

He dug desperately through the snow, hoping to find any leftover nuts. Other squirrels who had prepared ahead of time saw him struggling and kindly shared some of their own stored nuts with him.

The young squirrel works alongside the other squirrels, storing nuts into a tree hollow amid a snow-covered forest of bare branches and white ground. Soft, pale sunlight breaks through the clouds, and every squirrel looks determined and friendly.

The young squirrel promised himself he would plan ahead from then on. For the rest of that winter, he helped the other squirrels gather nuts for the following year, having learned just how important it is to prepare early.

Moral of the story

Planning and preparing ahead of time keeps us from struggling when hard times suddenly arrive.
