The Night Jibjib Got a Star

At project night, Teacher Sailom gave Jibjib a leaf star for speaking so clearly. Everyone applauded, and Hookhook clapped too. Yet a knot formed inside because no one mentioned the star map that had taken many nights.

Hookhook wondered whether the knot would disappear if Jibjib's star disappeared. But seeing that happy smile made one thing clear: Hookhook did not want Jibjib to feel sad. The little owl went to tilt a thoughtful head on a quiet branch.

Mother Owl offered three questions: Did Hookhook want the same star, help practicing, or someone to notice the effort? Hookhook touched the card with a large eye. What the little owl wanted was careful attention.

Hookhook returned and told the teacher, “I want to explain how I followed these stars.” Teacher Sailom apologized for rushing and made time. Hookhook described recording positions, while Jibjib asked questions that helped everyone understand.

Hookhook did not receive the same leaf star, but received many questions and a plan to stargaze together. The knot loosened. Hookhook could celebrate a friend's star and a personal place to shine at the same time.

Jealousy does not make us a bad friend. It may be pointing to a need we can name and communicate.
