A Little Table from Four Regions

Four family dishes came to the little table: a northern family's vegetable khao soi, an Isan family's egg-brushed khao jee, a central family's miang kham, and a southern family's turmeric fish rice. Hookhook prepared a star for the tastiest dish, but nobody wanted a family story turned into a contest.

Teacher Sailom replaced the star with picture questions: Who taught the recipe? When does the family eat it? How is this household's version different? The friends shared noodle, charcoal-grill, and turmeric memories without claiming one recipe represented an entire region.

Before tasting, the adults opened the real ingredient lists and placed clear picture cards for wheat, soy, egg, peanut, shrimp, and fish. Hookhook had assumed appearance was enough, but a small sauce could contain something eyes could not see.

Jibjib had a peanut allergy and did not take food from the shared table. An adult prepared sealed fruit in a separate area and checked its label and utensils with Jibjib's family. Nobody suggested trying just a little; Jibjib chose what felt safe.

No dish won a star. Instead, a four-direction picture map linked every plate to a family portrait. Everyone heard more than one flavor story, and everyone had checked food suitable for them. Hookhook reused the star token as a coaster.

Food can tell many family stories; respect means hearing their origins and helping everyone choose safely.
