Momotaro, the Peach Boy

An old couple found an enormous peach floating down a stream. When they carefully opened it, a tiny boy stepped out. They named him Momotaro and raised him with love until he grew healthy and strong.

One day, villagers explained that oni from a distant island had taken their tools, seeds, and treasured belongings. Momotaro offered to ask for them back. Grandmother packed millet dumplings, and Grandfather reminded him to carry thoughtfulness alongside courage.

Along the road, he met a dog with a fine nose, a monkey who climbed swiftly, and a pheasant who saw far ahead. Momotaro shared a dumpling with each and asked how they wished to help. The four set out as a team.

At the oni island, Pheasant scouted, Monkey untied the gate, and Dog followed the scent to the storehouse. Momotaro told the oni chief, “We have not come for what belongs to you. We have come to return what was stolen.” Seeing the fearless teamwork, the oni agreed.

The oni promised not to steal again and helped carry everything to the boat. Momotaro and his friends returned every item to its owner. The village thanked not one hero, but Dog, Monkey, Pheasant, and everyone who had used a special strength for the whole community.

A strong team does not need everyone to be alike; it shares, listens, and combines different strengths for a common purpose.
