Parents' guide

Read The Tortoise and the Hare beyond “don't be careless”

A good fit for

Children who enjoy races, predictions, or practicing a small task over time. It opens a conversation about different paces without comparing a child's speed with someone else's.

Know before reading

The hare mocks the tortoise and loses after falling asleep. Some children may read the ending as punishment. Explore choices and feelings on both sides instead of sorting the characters into capable and incapable.

Words to explore

overconfident
so sure of success that we stop paying attention
steady
continuing at a pace we can maintain
finish line
the point where a race ends

Before reading

  • From the cover, who seems faster, and what makes you think so?
  • How could two racers with different speeds make a race enjoyable and fair?

While reading

  • Why does the hare believe it is safe to nap?
  • What might the tortoise be thinking or feeling while passing the hare?

After reading

  • Would the story end the same way if the hare stayed awake?
  • What choices helped the tortoise reach the finish?
  • If you organized another race, what rule would you change?

A 10-minute after-reading activity

About 10 minutes

Materials: 5 pieces of paper, crayons

  1. Draw one important event on each piece of paper.
  2. Mix the cards and put them in order from the start to the finish.
  3. Change one card, then tell a new ending together.

What may feel scary or confusing

The teasing may connect with a child's experience of being compared. Listen before deciding who was wrong, and make clear that speed is not a measure of a person's worth.

For adults: leave room for the child's view

Avoid turning the tortoise's win into a criticism of laziness. Ask what each character does well and what support might help each one.
