Hookhook Goes to School in the Sunshine

Rim Dao School was planting a tree in the morning. Hookhook set a light-up clock beside the bed and woke earlier than usual. Sleepy eyes or not, the little owl wanted to dig with Jibjib and the others.

Soon the sunlight grew bright and sounds bounced around the yard. Hookhook kept pushing, scooped soil into the wrong tray, and nearly bumped a watering can. Frustrated, the little owl retreated beneath the eaves.

Teacher Sailom did not say to simply endure it. The teacher asked what might help. Hookhook chose a wide-brimmed hat, a dim rest corner, and a moon-picture card for requesting a break without shouting.

Hookhook returned to the garden in short turns. When tired, the moon card signaled a break beside Tuam, whose long walk had also been tiring. Jibjib carried soil while Hookhook's sharp eyes spotted small stones in the hole.

Before noon, the new tree stood tall. The rest corner was not only for Hookhook; several classmates used it when the sun felt strong or they needed quiet. Speaking up had made the whole class more comfortable.

Asking for what helps us learn is not unfair, and a thoughtful option may help other people too.
