The Tailorbird and the Loose Nest

Mai the tailorbird threaded plant fiber through leaf edges until they formed a soft nest. She was proud that her stitches were the strongest in the tea bush.

That night, monsoon wind shook the branch. The seam held, but the branch swung so hard that its fastening knot began to slip. More stitches did not help.

Mai felt shy about telling anyone. Then she thought of her three eggs and flew to a weaverbird who knew knots and a squirrel who knew strong branches. Both hurried over.

The squirrel chose a sturdy fork, the weaverbird showed a knot that would not slip, and Mai stitched three new supports. They tug-tested everything before moving the eggs safely.

When the wind returned, the nest only rocked gently. Mai thanked her friends and taught them her leaf stitch. From then on, the tea bush had a stitcher, a knotter, and a branch expert on one team.

Being capable does not mean doing everything alone.
