Ton and the Promised Seedlings

Before the long holiday, the teacher trusted Ton with six marigold seedlings. He promised to water them every morning and lined their pots beneath the roof at home.

Ton kept his promise for two mornings. On the third, his family suddenly needed to visit Grandma in another district. Ton almost decided the plants could wait until the next day.

He tried moving the pots indoors, then remembered the seedlings still needed light. Ton called Nid next door and showed her exactly how much water to use instead of leaving her to guess.

After watering, Nid sent Ton a picture of the seedlings. Ton thanked her and wrote down which days were his and which day was hers, so they would neither skip nor water twice.

When school reopened, all six seedlings stood strong. Ton honestly told the teacher that Nid had helped for one day. The teacher smiled, because keeping a promise includes finding help when we cannot do everything alone.

A promise becomes dependable when we plan, act, and ask for help in time.
