Yim and the Smooth Book Path

Yim and Fon arrived early for the book swap. Boxes blocked the entrance, a rug curled into a ridge, and the tables stood too close together for Yim's wheelchair to pass.

Fon almost pushed Yim's chair over the rug, but stopped to ask, “How would you like me to help?” Yim answered, “Please help move the things. Then I can test the path myself.”

They invited the librarian to map a route with blue ribbon. They measured wide aisles, opened a turning space, and lowered signs for smaller children. Yim tested every section and named the places that still caught her wheels.

An adult secured the rug and set a sturdy ramp at the low threshold. Fon cleared away the boxes. Yim rolled up the ramp herself and gave a thumbs-up when she passed without being lifted.

When the swap opened, wheelchair users, a grandpa with a cane, small children, and people carrying book boxes all moved easily along the blue route. Fon smiled at Yim. A path that began by listening to one person helped many.

Good spaces begin by asking users, listening to their answers, and designing so more people can take part independently.
