Rat Island, Cat Island, and the Crystal at Sea

A Songkhla legend tells that long ago, a Chinese merchant regularly sailed a trading junk to the city. He brought a dog and a cat from the shore and cared for them aboard his ship. They never went hungry, but the farther they sailed, the more they missed home. A rat living below deck dreamed of solid ground too.

The dog knew the merchant kept a magic crystal that could prevent its holder from sinking. The cat asked the rat to bring it out so all three could swim ashore. “Could we ask him first?” said the rat. “And who will return it when we land?” No one settled those questions. Homesickness and haste led them to take a shortcut they knew was wrong.

When the ship returned near Songkhla, the rat slipped inside and carried out the crystal. Then all three entered the sea. The rat swam first with the crystal in its mouth, the cat followed, and the dog came last. Long waves lifted and lowered them, but the crystal's light surrounded all three, and the coast seemed a little closer with every stroke.

Far out at sea, the rat feared the others would take the crystal after they landed. The cat feared the rat would run away with it, so she swam closer to ask. But the rat could not speak while carrying the crystal and mistook her approach for a pounce. He darted away. The crystal slipped from his mouth, its round glow sinking slowly into the deep blue.

When the light vanished, waves carried the three apart. The legend says they never reached home in their old forms. By dawn, two small islands appeared as Rat Island and Cat Island. The dog became Tang Kuan Hill beside the shore, while the crystal broke into the sparkling sand of Sai Kaeo Beach. The sea grew quiet, but their story remained.

Many generations later, a child stood with Grandma on the Songkhla shore and looked across at the islands. “A legend isn't a scientific map,” Grandma said, “but it can help us remember important questions.” The child replied, “Before traveling together, I'll ask first, say what worries me, and agree on who is responsible for what.” A soft sea breeze stirred, as if the old story were listening.

A shared plan should begin with permission, spoken fears, and clear responsibilities, because unspoken mistrust can cost everyone something important.
