The Oak and the Reeds

Beside a wide river stood a great oak tree, tall and proud, next to a cluster of slender reeds swaying by the water's edge. The oak was very proud of its thick trunk and its wide, sturdy branches.

When the wind blew, the reeds bent gently along with it. Seeing this, the oak laughed and said, "You're all so weak! The tiniest breeze pushes you around. Not me — I stand firm and never sway."

The reeds replied politely, "We simply bend with the wind instead of fighting it. But you should be careful too, dear oak — being too stiff isn't always a good thing." Still, the oak did not believe them and kept standing tall and proud.

One night, a fierce storm swept in. The wind roared so hard that every tree in the forest shook. The reeds bowed low, almost touching the water, while the oak fought the wind with all its strength, refusing to bend even a little.

When the strongest gust came, the oak snapped right down the middle with a loud crack. The reeds simply bowed with the wind and sprang back up safe and sound once the storm passed. At last, the oak understood that bending can be just as strong as standing firm.
